on not watching the odyssey
Nolan's Odyssey came out on yesterday. I haven't seen it and don't really want to.
building things, reading stuff, making noise. belém.

I've tried to write this a few times, and it keeps turning into a list of reasons. The reasons aren't the point. So I'm just going to write how it feels.
Three in the morning is when I do my best work and my worst thinking. Same chair, same cold coffee, same blue light on my face. I've built a lot of things in that chair. Lately I sit there and wonder who the hell they were for.
I don't know how to do things halfway. I think about them for days, plan them down to the smallest detail, stay up until the sky gets light because I want whatever I'm making to be good. And lately it keeps landing somewhere that doesn't care. Sometimes it lands exactly where I aimed and still doesn't matter. Trying hard doesn't come with a receipt. You hand over the nights and the part of your brain that was supposed to be resting, and at the end somebody shrugs. The shrug is the whole answer.
Right now I'm training my own replacements. Not one. Two, in two different places. I'm good at it, which is almost funny. I'm patient, I explain things twice, I leave good notes. It feels like packing my own boxes while smiling at the new tenant, then crossing town and doing it again.
Something else is ending too, and where pride should be there's just a low hum: you could have been more. And the next door, the one I actually want, I've already written the rejection for it in my head. I've read it so many times I know the font. None of this is a tragedy on its own. Put together, it says one thing, quietly, over and over: you tried, and it wasn't enough.
The sadness I can handle. What gets me is the flatness. I used to have one trick for bad seasons: find one thing, throw myself into it completely, let it carry me. Lately even that doesn't work. I pick something up and the want drains out of it halfway through, and I'm left holding a thing I used to care about.
"Perfectionist" is a nice word for a guy who can't let anything just be okay. I sand every edge. I rewrite the message five times. When it still isn't enough, my head does the same math it always does: the thing was fine, so the problem must be me. It never carries the one.
People who love me say I'm too hard on myself. They're right, and it doesn't help. I can argue my way out of every dark thought, clean and logical, and win. Then I lie down and believe it anyway. Knowing something costs nothing. Feeling it is what sends the bill.
Some nights I can't tell if people like me or like the guy I play. He's funny, he has everything under control. I'm tired of him, and I'm pretty sure he's tired of me. I know how that sounds. I'm writing it anyway, because that's how it feels at three in the morning, and I'm done pretending that version of me doesn't exist.
Pascal said all of humanity's problems come from our inability to sit quietly in a room alone. I can sit in a room alone just fine. It's the thoughts that won't sit still.
Bourdain wrote that life leaves marks on you, that most of them are beautiful, and that often they hurt. I've been collecting the second kind lately. But a mark means you went somewhere and it touched you. I went. It touched me. I'm counting that.
I don't have a lesson here, and I'm not going to end with "and that's when I realized." It is getting better, slowly. Some days better just means I ate something real and answered one text. Maybe the effort wasn't in vain and I can't see it from here yet. I honestly don't know. I just didn't want to keep it in that chair at three in the morning anymore.

I work with AI every day at IBM, and for a while that was enough to make me sick of it.
